TravelWise reduces car trips by 1.8 million each year

A survey of 17,000 students at 43 TravelWise schools has confirmed that School Travel Plans are very effective in reducing car trips to school.

School Travel Plans Delivering Real Benefit

ARTA worked with the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) to analyse the travel choices of students at TravelWise schools.

Overall, school travel plans are reducing private vehicle use by 3 per cent, which means 1.8 million fewer car trips each year. More children are walking and more families are carpooling to school.

Elsewhere in NZ, car travel to school is rising, according to surveys undertaken by the Ministry of Transport.

This research provides valuable data and experience to help improve school travel plans. It also proves that travel plans are making a positive difference in Auckland.
